G-Darma (sometimes stylized as goodarma) is a streetwear brand based in New York City; the brainchild of Colombian immigrant artist, designer and environmentalist Julian Lopez, the brand was founded in 2019 as part fashion label, part art project, part consciousness-raising endeavor, part social experiment—Lopez wanted to explore if clothing could be a compelling vehicle to convey his firm stance on rebuking fast fashion/crass consumerism and exploitation/unfair trade; all their clothes are produced by recycling raw materials and scrap fabric discarded by factories in his hometown in Colombia, thus keeping them from entering the landfills; they also offer one-of-a-kind pieces that Lopez personally draws and/or paints on (in the spring of this year, they released a 30-piece limited edition collection featuring Lopez’s original drawings and caricatures on old T-shirts that they found at a swap meet in L.A.); for their summer 2022 collection, which they baptized “Evanescence,” Lopez made exuberant use of his artistic thumbprint (and of his inexhaustible knack for art direction) to create colorful yet edgy pieces with elements that take a gut-punching jab at the high gloss of American excess and the perverse fetishism of pop culture—e.g., bright, poppy but exhaustingly repetitive prints of happy pills as a satire on our rapacious tendencies to abuse our bodies in pursuit of transient highs; aside from just using reclaimed and recycled materials to make the clothes, Lopez also seeded this new collection with multifunctional pieces to extend their usage—their roll-neck long-sleeved tops, featuring high-contrast Day-Glo color combos and catchphrases that could very well have been culled from Frankie Goes to Hollywood’s magnum opus, can be used as streetwear, clubwear, swimwear, or MTB/adventure wear; asked what his future plans for the brand are, Lopez states that he is working on opening their first store in L.A.; for now, their pieces can be bought online via goodarma.com, or from their stockists all over the country (GG’s Social Club in Bushwick, Brooklyn; Wynwood Tribe in Miami; DEN-I-ZEN in Fire Island, NY; Hyperclash in Santa Fe, NM; and Boardwalk Vintage in Venice, CA); visit their Website to shop their latest collections; follow @good.arma on Instagram for updates on new collection drops and special promotions
